A Brief History - A Tale Of Two Carnations
Mother’s Day, a special occasion for Mom’s around the world, is an annual celebration of motherhood. In the United States, this day falls upon the second Sunday in May and in the UK, Mothering Sunday, is celebrated sometime in March usually during the period of Lent.
History tells us that first occurrence of a special today for Mum’s was observed in 1872 by Julia Ward Howe who wanted people to dedicate June 2nd as a day of peace. Others, including Mary Towles Sasseen and Anna Jarvis of West Virginia who, in 1908, initiated a campaign for a nationally recognised Mother’s Day. It became customary on the second Sunday in May to wear a white or red carnation on that day. A white carnation signalled that the person’s Mom had passed away, while a red on denoted she was still living.
